The BK21 Research Group in the Department of Integrative Biotechnology Concludes International Web Conference

‘The 1st SKKU–Durham–Southampton International Conference on Biotechnology & Bioengineering’ Successfully Held

The BK21 Research Group in the Department of Integrative Biotechnology (Innovative Human Resource Development Team for Applied Life Biotechnology, headed by Professor Jae Youl Cho) successfully hosted the international web conference titled “The 1st SKKU–Durham–Southampton International Conference on Biotechnology & Bioengineering” on February 6, in collaboration with Durham University in the United Kingdom.

The international web conference is part of the Web-Seminar program hosted annually by the Education and Research Group. The program aims to invigorate international research exchange by inviting distinguished global speakers and to provide a platform for special lectures focused on the dissemination of research outcomes. In 2025, the event was held over seven days, featuring eight speakers affiliated with seven international universities. In 2026, the conference was jointly organized by Durham University, the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, and the BK21 Research Group of the Department of Integrative Biotechnology at SKKU.

The conference was held online via Zoom from 9:15 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on February 6. Six participating professors from the BK21 Research Group in the Department of Integrative Biotechnology, four professors from Durham University, and three professors from the University of Southampton delivered presentations. The conference consisted of two sessions divided into domestic and international speakers. Each session was chaired by one professor from Hanyang University and one professor from Seoul National University, respectively.

The conference concluded successfully with the participation of more than 100 attendees, including faculty members, graduate students, and emerging researchers (postdoctoral fellows). The presentations were followed by a Q&A session, facilitating active exchange between the speakers and students. Participating students and researchers gained insights into domestic and international research trends and the latest advancements in integrative biotechnology, thereby expanding their research competencies.

This event achieved meaningful progress in expanding international research exchange beyond the limitations of time and space through an online platform. Jae Youl Cho, Head of the BK21 Research Group in the Department of Integrative Biotechnology, stated, “We plan to continue hosting international exchange events based on the Web-Seminar platform in collaboration with universities from various countries,” adding, “We will steadily expand the exchange platform to support students in developing into talents with global research capabilities.”
