The Korean Association of Slavic Languages Appoints

Professor Ahn Hyug as New President

The Korean Association of Slavic Languages, the only academic society in Korea dedicated exclusively to Slavic languages, has appointed Professor Ahn Hyug of the College of Humanities as its 16th President, who will lead the Association for a two-year term beginning in 2026. Founded in 1996 and marking its 30th anniversary this year, the Korean Association of Slavic Languages is a distinguished academic institution that has conducted linguistic research across the Slavic language sphere, including Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Czech, Polish, Serbian, and Croatian.

The Association regularly publishes Slavic Language Studies, a journal indexed in the Korea Citation Index (KCI), and brings together a wide range of participants, including experts from universities and research institutes as well as educators teaching Slavic languages in middle and high school settings, thereby sustaining and advancing Slavic language research in Korea.

Professor Ahn Hyug, elected as the new President, is a scholar who has conducted in-depth analyses of Slavic languages using cognitive linguistics methodologies and has successfully carried out major research projects supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea and other organizations. He is particularly recognized for his active engagement with Slavic language scholars around the world, contributing to the enhancement of the international standing of Slavic studies in Korea.

In his New Year’s address for 2026, Professor Ahn Hyug identified “technological convergence” and “talent development” as key priorities during his term. Specifically, he plans to actively promote the integration of artificial intelligence and linguistics to expand the scope of the discipline, while operating tailored programs to support so-called “digital native” junior researchers in successfully entering the academic community. Through these initiatives, he aims to develop the Korean Association of Slavic Languages into a platform for convergence between the humanities and technology, as well as a vibrant forum for exchange between present and future generations of researchers.
