SKKU Strengthens Research Network with

Leading Canadian Universities

▲ Visit to Université de Montréal

To expand its global academic network and strengthen the foundation for collaborative research in advanced science and technology, SKKU successfully completed a series of visits to leading Canadian universities from May 19 to 21.

The delegation was led by President Ji Beom Yoo and included the Vice President for International Affairs, the Vice President for Planning and Coordination, the Dean of the College of Engineering, the Dean of the College of Information and Communication Engineering, the Director of the SKKU Advanced Institute of Nano Technology (SAINT), as well as distinguished researchers from related fields. A total of 21 participants engaged in discussions aimed at developing practical cooperation initiatives between top universities in Korea and Canada in future strategic industries.

▲ Workshop at Université de Montréal

On May 19, the first day of the visit, the delegation visited Université de Montréal and met with President Daniel Jutras to discuss the establishment of a sustainable model for academic exchange between the two institutions. In addition, the two universities successfully co-hosted joint workshops in AI (Artificial Intelligence), bio, and nano fields with participation from researchers from both sides. Université de Montréal is home to Professor Yoshua Bengio, one of the pioneers of deep learning, and is widely recognized as a global hub for AI-driven interdisciplinary research in data science and engineering. Building on this workshop, both universities agreed to combine their world-class AI research capabilities and jointly identify next-generation interdisciplinary research opportunities.

▲ Visit to the University of Toronto

On May 20, the delegation visited the University of Toronto and met with President Melanie Woodin. During the meeting, the two universities reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration and jointly held a research workshop in information and communication technology (ICT) and engineering. The workshop provided a platform for sharing the latest technological research achievements from both institutions and for discussing interdisciplinary research models and collaborative strategies for nurturing global innovation talent capable of leading future industry trends. Ranked 29th in the QS World University Rankings, the University of Toronto is one of the world's leading universities and has been a key partner of SKKU since the two institutions established a student exchange partnership in 2022, building mutual trust through various collaborative initiatives.

▲ Visit to the University of Calgary

On May 21, the delegation visited the University of Calgary and formally signed a Student Exchange Agreement to promote student mobility between the two institutions. Through this agreement, SKKU students will gain opportunities to experience advanced educational programs in Canada. Following the signing ceremony, the two universities held a working-level meeting to discuss the systematic expansion of academic exchange in engineering and information and communication technology, as well as the development of joint educational programs and other forward-looking models for mutual growth.

President Ji Beom Yoo stated, “This series of visits to Canada’s leading universities will serve as a turning point in significantly expanding SKKU’s global research frontiers in advanced disciplines such as AI, bio, nano, and information and communication technology, where the university is already demonstrating strong leadership. Moving beyond simple exchanges, we will further solidify our position as a global top-tier research university by establishing robust international collaborative research infrastructure and expanding active student exchange programs.”
