The CAMPUS Asia (Social Sciences–Law) Project Group Selected as an Outstanding Performance Case for 2025

On February 11, at the “CAMPUS Asia Korea–China–Japan Expansion Program (2021–2025) Performance Report Conference” jointly hosted by the Ministry of Education and the Korean Council for University Education (hereinafter KCUE), the Project Group of the Law School and the College of Social Sciences at Sungkyunkwan University was selected as an outstanding case—an honor awarded to only two project groups among 20 nationwide.

The event was held at the JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square Seoul and proceeded successfully with the attendance of officials from the Ministry of Education and KCUE, as well as project directors and staff members from 20 project groups nationwide.

At the session, which shared the achievements of the past five years and discussed future operational directions, the SKKU project group delivered a presentation as an outstanding case under the theme of “Quality Assurance of Participating Students and the Formation of a Post-Graduation Legal Community.” This recognition reflects acknowledgment of its systematic management and sustainable performance model aligned with the objectives of the Korea–China–Japan Expansion Program.

Professor Chul Kwon of the Law School, who delivered the presentation, has served as the responsible professor of the SKKU project group for 15 years, from the first-phase pilot program in 2011 through the second and third phases. Drawing on extensive operational experience accumulated over the years, Professor Kwon analyzed key success factors of the project and presented specific performance indicators and case examples, highlighting the group’s differentiated competitiveness.

In particular, the presentation focused on the achievements of government-funded scholarship recipients selected through the CAMPUS Asia project group over the past 15 years. Many alumni (OB·OG) of the program have advanced to prestigious law schools in Korea and abroad, and are currently active in highly sought-after professional fields among Korean university students, including major law firms, judgeships, prosecutors’ offices, judicial clerkships, diplomatic service, and multinational corporate consulting. These concrete examples drew significant attention from attendees.

In addition, an international academic conference successfully held on November 29, 2025, was introduced as a comprehensive reflection of the project group’s 15-year achievements. A large number of OB·OG alumni from the CAMPUS Asia project participated in the event, strengthening intergenerational networks. The conference was evaluated as a substantive achievement of the project group, having played a significant role in supporting students’ career development and expanding international exchange. Following the presentation, an active Q&A session was held among representatives of the 20 project groups, KCUE, and the Ministry of Education.

CAMPUS Asia, a trilateral exchange program among leading universities in Korea, China, and Japan, was launched in 2011 as a government-supported pilot project and transitioned into a full-scale program in 2016. In November 2021, it further expanded its existing cooperation framework to include ASEAN universities under the “Mode 3” initiative.

As of February 2026, Professor Sunhee Lee, Dean of the Law School, and Professor Sungmin Park, Dean of the College of Social Sciences, serve as Co-Project Directors. Professor Chul Kwon of the Law School and Professor Inwook Kim of the Department of Political Science and Diplomacy participate as responsible professors, while Senior Researcher Ilhyun Ryu (Ph.D. in Law) serves as the coordinator.

Overseas partner institutions include the Law School of Renmin University of China (lead institution) and Nagoya University (lead institution) in Japan, as well as the Law School of Seoul National University in Korea; the School of Law at Tsinghua University and the KoGuan School of Law at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China; and the Faculty of Law at the National University of Singapore in ASEAN. These participating universities are among the top-ranked institutions in Asia, underscoring the distinguished status of the program.

According to the original plan, the Mode 3 expansion program was scheduled to conclude in February 2026, with the subsequent Mode 4 program to begin in March. However, due to recent political and diplomatic developments in East Asia, its launch has been slightly delayed. At the performance report conference, it was reaffirmed that the CAMPUS Asia project is being advanced as a government policy initiative led by the heads of state and foreign ministers of Korea, China, and Japan. It was also announced that the Mode 3 program would be extended until the formal launch of Mode 4 (by the end of August this year). Accordingly, uncertainties regarding the operation of the project group in 2026 have been resolved.

Meanwhile, in the upcoming CAMPUS Asia Mode 4 program, for which applications are scheduled in the second half of 2026, the successful operation of the existing 20 project groups is expected to be positively evaluated, potentially leading to an expansion in the number of new project groups. Accordingly, it appears necessary for diverse academic disciplines within SKKU to actively consider participation in the new project groups.
