College of Liberal Arts held the 35th Humanities Cultivation & Growth Program

The College of Liberal Arts (Dean Kim Ho) held the 35th Humanities Cultivation & Growth Program on Friday, December 5, at Siseupjae in Toegye Hall of Humanities on the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus.

At the 35th Humanities Cultivation & Growth Program, Professor Ahn Hyukg of the Department of Russian Language and Literature delivered a presentation titled “An Integrated Discourse Analysis of the Language of the Russia–Ukraine War.” He introduced qualitative and quantitative methodologies for interpreting war discourse from a cognitive-linguistic perspective and provided an objective description of how grammatical devices in language reflect speakers’ intentions. He also demonstrated the potential of objectifying subjective evaluations of textual content through AI sentiment analysis, while proposing alternatives for overcoming the limitations of such AI tools through humanities-based methodologies. The presentation introduced research showing that the language of politics related to war serves as a tool for constructing plausible justifications, and that humanities and AI together can accurately analyze and describe this language to reveal the intentions embedded in political discourse.

Since the first semester of the 2022 academic year, the College of Humanities has been hosting the Humanities Cultivation & Growth Program, a forum that provides an open space for discussion on academic topics. In the 2025 academic year, the College plans to invite internal and external researchers every two to three weeks on Fridays at noon to share engaging topics across various academic fields.

The College of Humanities will continue its efforts to ensure that the Humanities Cultivation & Growth Program serves as an academic community where faculty members can communicate freely, broaden avenues for exchange, and gain understanding and insight into other academic disciplines. In addition, to promote interdisciplinary exchange among members of the College, it is actively encouraging the interest and participation not only of its own faculty but also of faculty members from other academic units.

With the 35th session marking the completion of the Humanities Cultivation & Growth Program scheduled for the 2025 academic year, the next program will be held in the first semester of the 2026 academic year.
