SKKU’s Samsung Library 3D Spatial Data Selected as Official Evaluation Video by ISO MPEG

On October 11, 2025, the research team from Professor Eunseok Ryu’s MCSLab in the Department of Immersive Media Engineering, College of Software Convergence, announced that their large-scale 3D video dataset, “Library”, has been officially selected by the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 4 (MPEG Video Coding) as an evaluation video for the Gaussian Splat Coding (GSC) standardization experiment.

This achievement is the result of an international joint contribution conducted in collaboration with the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), with researchers Raegun Koo, Youngkyu Kim, Seunghyuk Ahn, and Isak Yang participating as co-authors.

The Library Sequence is a large-scale dataset that captures SKKU’s Samsung Library and surrounding areas in immersive 3D using drone-based aerial recording. The research team recorded the campus environment at a true-to-scale ratio and precisely reconstructed it in three dimensions, creating a new form of 3D digital asset that extends real-world spaces into virtual environments. The data was reconstructed using Gaussian Splatting, an emerging next-generation 3D immersive video technology gaining worldwide attention.

The MPEG working group is currently developing an international standard for 3D Gaussian Splatting-based video compression technology (GSC). The Library Sequence has been designated as the official exploration experiment data (JEE 6.1) for performance evaluation within this process. This means that all future GSC algorithms proposed by global research institutions and companies will be benchmarked and verified using SKKU’s Library Sequence.

In other words, the dataset produced by SKKU will serve as a “common test sequence” that determines the quality standards of the forthcoming international specification. This milestone also highlights the successful collaboration between academia and national research institutes, demonstrating how Korean researchers are playing a leading role in global standardization efforts.

With this selection, SKKU’s campus space has become an international data reference cited and used by researchers around the world. Through immersive media technology, the university’s environment has been reborn as a symbolic digital cultural asset on the global research stage. The MCSLab team plans to continue its collaboration with the ISO standardization committee to advance 3D spatial data compression and transmission experiments based on the Library Sequence.
